Retreat to the Corinth

Description

"Enjolras had shouted to the soldiers: "Don't advance!" and as an officer had not obeyed, Enjolras had killed the officer. He was now in the little inner court of the redoubt, with his back planted against the Corinthe building, a sword in one hand, a rifle in the other, holding open the door of the wine-shop which he barred against assailants. He shouted to the desperate men:--"There is but one door open; this one."-- And shielding them with his body, and facing an entire battalion alone, he made them pass in behind him. All precipitated themselves thither. Enjolras, executing with his rifle, which he now used like a cane, what single-stick players call a "covered rose" round his head, levelled the bayonets around and in front of him, and was the last to enter"

I've said it before.

I'll say it again.

Enjolras is Made of Awesome.

I'm playing around with a few sketch and composition ideas for this one. I think the tight, cramped, busy composition could work to convey the sense of the passage, with a group of men frantically cramming into a single door, but I would prefer to be working on A3 size rather than the A4 my scanner limits me to. And even then it does things like cut off the top of the image with the Corinth sign above the door!

I was crying horribly the entire time reading this part of the book. You capture this scene wonderfully. The severe look in his eyes, his ripped sleeve. It's such a great portrayal. I agree with you. Pure, 100% Awesome. Not from concentrate.
